It all started when the lovely folks from Liberation Foods gave us a call. They make fantastic fair-trade snacks and had a mission for us: help them get more people to fall in love with their products through their website. Challenge accepted!
It all started with a fantastic foundation. The team at Liberation Foods came to us not just with a goal, but with a deep understanding of their customers. They’d already commissioned detailed persona research, which was the perfect launchpad for us.
Our initial plan was ambitious: we wanted to create a unique lifestyle video for every single product. We imagined a snappy video on the Chilli & Lime Cashews page showing a busy professional, and another on the Natural Mixed Nuts page capturing a lazy Sunday morning. The idea was to sell a specific moment with each product.
But then we hit upon a bigger, more exciting challenge: what if we could marry all those individual moments together into one incredible “hero” brand video? A single, powerful story that could sit on their homepage and capture the entire spirit of the brand.
That became our new mission. To make sure we were on the right track before committing the full budget, we created a low-budget mockup of our concept. It was a simple, rough version of the video, but it proved our idea worked: we could seamlessly weave together all these different life moments into one cohesive and emotional narrative.
With the client giving us an enthusiastic thumbs-up on the mockup, we moved on to casting our perfect family, ‘Adele’ and ‘Nick’, and planning the finer details, like bringing on a specialist food wrangler to make the snacks look absolutely irresistible.
With a solid plan in hand, we headed into the shoot, which we’d split into two parts: a day for our actors and a day purely for the food.
The actor day was beautifully organized chaos! The main challenge, by far, was the sheer number of scenes we had to capture. For every little moment—from a fitness session to a business meeting to a festival vibe—our two lead actors had to go through a full costume and makeup change. It was a whirlwind of activity, but our amazing makeup artist and costume sourcer were complete superstars, keeping everything moving smoothly.
Our secret weapon for tying it all together was a trusty metronome, ticking away on set. We had our actors perform their movements in time with the beat, knowing that later in the edit, it would allow us to sync every action perfectly to the rhythm of the music. It was the magic ingredient that made the complex concept feel effortless. The food day, by contrast, was a much calmer affair, where we could take our time to light and shoot every delicious peanut and cashew to perfection.
This is where all the planning truly paid off. In the edit suite, we started piecing together the footage from our whirlwind actor day. Thanks to the metronome, all those different scenes didn’t feel disjointed at all; they clicked together beautifully with the music, creating a seamless flow from one moment to the next.
Watching the final video, we knew we’d cracked it. It told a story that was all-encompassing, showing how Liberation products can rescue any part of your day. It was relatable, vibrant, and made you want to reach into the screen and grab a snack. It was the perfect hero video to welcome customers to the website, and a brilliant example of how a big idea can come to life when everyone is on the same page. Mission accomplished!
